DIY: OMBRÉ/FADED SHIRT

Since I'm nearing the end of my semester, I thought I'd try my hand at some fashion and beauty related DIY projects. So here's the first thing I tried my hands on: a DIY ombré/faded shirt. It's one of the biggest trends for the summer both for guys and girls and is perfect to wear pool parties, late night summer BBQs and even for a late evening summer date. The setting sun will make the fade stand out even more.

You will require: 1 bottle of bleach, 1 bottle of distilled white vinegar, a medium sized bucket, warm water, 1 plastic bag  1 rubber band, 1 clothes clip and a pair of rubber gloves.

STEP 1: Fold your shirt vertically and decide what half of the shirt you wish to bleach. For example, if you wish to bleach the bottom half, wrap the top part of your shirt with the plastic bag and then tie it with the rubber band ( vice versa if you wish to bleach the top half) this way, you want bleach the entire shirt.

STEP 2: Fill half of your bucket with warm water. Next, add the bleach to the water. Remember to add one part bleach to two parts water. This step is crucial because if you add too much bleach it WILL COMPLETELY RUIN YOU SHIRT.

STEP 3: Place the part of your shirt that you wish to bleach in the water and then clip the half wrapped with the plastic bag to the bucket. Even if it is wrapped in the plastic bag, the water can get to your shirt and ruin, so clip it to the bucket just as extra precaution. Leave you shirt in the water for a minimum of 1 hour and maximum of 1 hour and 15 minutes. DO NOT EXCEED BEYOND THAT.

STEP 4: After you shirt has been bleached and lost its colour, you drain all the water and rinse you shirt under running water with your hands. Take care to wear rubber gloves during this step as the bleach can damage your skin quite badly.

STEP 5: Once you've properly rinsed it, you fill half of your bucket with cold water. Next add your distilled white vinegar to the bucket. Make sure you add one part vinegar to two parts water. Leave the bleached half of your shirt in the water for a MAXIMUM of 30 minutes with the the other half of the shirt clipped to the bucket. The vinegar will stop the bleach from further reacting with your shirt and won't make it lose any more colour.

STEP 6: Once you've let it sit in the water with the vinegar for 30 minutes, take it out and once again rinse it under running water with your hands. (Take care to wear gloves during this step as well.) After you've rinsed all the vinegar out, you drop in the washing machine and give it a quick wash with some softener. After that, you can either put it in the dryer or let it air dry (I prefer the latter).

Once it's dried just iron it and pair it with a nice pair of distressed denim shorts or jeans and accessorize with leather bracelets, a side bag, a nice pair of shades and you're ready to take on the summer with style.

Hope you enjoyed! Xxx
