RICK OWENS SPRING/SUMMER 2014 MEN'S COLLECTION

It's hard to pull of black during the summer and spring time, especially if the garments are heavy and thick and leather. But Rick Owens doesn't seem to care about that. Well okay maybe not entirely.

The garments were lighter than his usual looks. Owens stuck to what he knew best; monochrome, uniformity, minimalism and asymmetry. A lot of leather was seen (as expected) in the collection. Other elements seen included what seemed to be like cashmere ( I could be wrong) jackets and something new as well. A lot of mesh vests with zippers running down the garment were seen. The mesh ha also been sewn into asymmetrical cuts on some garments. It was a typical Owens' collection.

However, with that being said, the show itself was such a huge disappointment. Yes, there are times when designers incorporate live music performances into their shows, but they do it in a way that attention isn't diverted away from the clothes. In fact the music is actually supposed to help boost the mood and help add effect to the theme of the show. But this years Rick Owens how did the exact opposite; there was a heavy metal band playing loud music. On top of that the drummers were on a spinning platform that would just not stop. All this along with the blaring lights just shifted the attention of the guests to the music rather than the clothes.

DSQUARED2 SPRING/SUMMER 2014 MEN'S COLLECTION

Tropical jungle chic is what the twin fashion duo Dean and Dan Caten gave us in their 2014 SS men's collection.

The scene was set against a tropical background with a waterfall, crashed aero plane and thick, dense shrubs growing everywhere. Models were seen bathing under the waterfall and soaking up the apparent 'tropical heat.' They walked down a runway that seemed to look like a dirt path travelled only by adventurers.

And since the main theme of the show was the tropical jungle, it kicked off with one of the models walking runway in swimwear. Speaking of which, the white shorts with the floral motifs looked really good. It was just the right length and colour for the beach.

New versions of classic pieces such as leather jackets were seen. The jackets had tropical motifs such as zebra prints. Distressed jeans paired with khaki jackets gave models a distinguished military look.

Knee length leather pants were also seen in the collection. There was one look where a black leather short was paired with a soft, white, cotton shirt. The combination was just perfect.

Some shirts and shorts also featured tribal faces on them. This added heightened the tropical jungle look even more. The show ended with a typical look from DSQUARED2; a tuxedo paired with jeans and combat boots, along with a Macaw bird happily perched on the model's shoulder. Another fine collection by the Caten duo.

VERSACE SPRING/SUMMER 2014 MEN'S COLLECTION

This year for the house's SS 2014 men's collection, Donatella Versace envisioned a man who was an athlete, an entrepreneur and a fashion enthusiast as well.

The collection had a lot of different looks ranging from leather bikers to young businessman to athletes. Donatella herself said that the discipline most athletes possessed was a major influence for the collection.

This influence was obviously seen throughout the collection as a lot of the models and clothes were seen with a lot of colourful Kinesio tape. This actually set the mood for the collection an made it really upbeat.

As for suits, they were tailored to perfection. Models walked down the runway looking like young business tycoons.

An entire leather suit was also seen in the collection along with other leather garments like jackets and pants; both in black and a sort of muddy green. There was no dominant colour in my opinion as there were a variety of colours were seen; including the flamboyant jumpsuits which seemed to have drawn inspiration form some of Versace's looks back in the 90s.

All in all it was an excellent collection and lived up to the brand's name; promising quality and uniqueness, which is why Versace continues to be a brand much loved by fashion enthusiasts everywhere. (Including myself)
